I agree about chiuauas being hyperactive. I've never seen a calm, peaceful chiuaua. They always go nuts barking at me.

I've had Mia for a little over two years now, she loves being around people, loves being cuddled. Now comes Charle (1 y/o terrier/chihuahua mix). We got him when he was 4 weeks old and he lived with us for 7 months or so. Mia would play with him, on her own terms and would snap at him when she had enough. Charlie went to live with my son for a while and is now back with us. Mia remembers him but now she seems depressed. Doesn't want to play with him, lays all day on her bed, doesn't want her cookies, just lays there. Yesterday we took her to the vet because she is also fighting her allergies, Vet found her healthy, prescribed allergy meds and told us it will take some time for her to adjust to Charlie. I feel horrible am giving her extra loving and quiet time with me, but she is still sad. Any ideas will be appreciated.

I disagree about small children. All dogs may at some point have issues with small children, but it cant be across the board. My Chi loves my 10 yr old because he plays with her the most. She'd even sleep with him if I let her. So she is our family dog. I think by small children you may mean toddlers...

Hi Junebug,
Okay, you are right. I am sorry about that part. Off course it is possible to have children and Chihuahua at the same time. I just mean that I don't think that Chihuahua is the right dog for a family with small children. It is possible but I just don't seem it has the right mix. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

I agree with your thorough description of the Chihuahua temperament for the most part. However, I don't agree with the statement regarding Chihuahuas and young children, necessarily. I adopted a 5 year old Chi last year and have had only success between my children, ages 3,4,7, and 10, and my pet. So I think the statement "Chihuahuas and small children NEVER mix," is an unfair and untrue statement. Sometimes Chihuahuas can learn to accept small children and treat them well, as long as the children are careful and respectful toward the dog. Yes, my dog is very territorial and can be jealous at times over me. But she has never been aggressive towards the children! She does try to jump into my lap when they approach me but that's as far as it goes. My Chihuahua is a wonderful animal and we consider her a part of the family. She really is incredible! I would just hate for any family to shy away from the Chihuahua due to a blanket statement.
