Historical Review
The Shih Tzu breed came to the United States less than a century ago. These dogs had originated from the Chinese Empire, and then traveled to England to be lap dogs before arriving in the Americas. The Shih Tzu is a toy dog who is able to sit on their owners lap as they are only about ten pounds soaking wet.
Grooming
When the owner needs to groom their Shih Tzu, it can be quite a laborious process. It is recommended to brush the Shih Tzu weekly or even daily since they have an upper coat and a coat beneath their top coat. This is to prevent matting and knots in the hair, and to keep it long and flowing. The hair around the face of the dog can be pinned up on top of its head, or trimmed so the dog is able to see where they are walking. To keep the coat of the dog nice and silky, the owner should bathe the dog at least once a week so the hair is easier to comb. There are many products out on the market for dogs who have long hair, like a detangle spray.
